The biggest thing that stood out to me in this article was a small section at the beginning of the article that talked about how memory works, and how repetition is the best way to retain something. The article also mentioned that when learning music, just remembering the song is not enough. The goal is to refine your musical skills. As the article says, "This kind of memory adaptation requires variations in the repetitions of skill". I think that this really applies very well to rehearsal frames. When you go through a rehearsal frame, you use several different methods to teach the same basic principle or skill. This variation both allows the learner to retain this knowledge better, and also holds their attention, keeping them from getting bored. For me, making this connection between the rehearsal frames and retaining memory has helped me understand the rehearsal frames and their purpose a lot better.
ReplyDeleteI agree with the comment about the rehearsal points, and I like how you connected that with retaining memory!
DeleteYes, using lesson points in your framework can help the student learn the value of organization in their learning. Also, it can increase their memory with the repetition of the desired learning points.
DeleteA very important part of violin playing, and music playing in general, is repetition. The article delves into the key of repetition and the necessity to retain the knowledge of careful practicing.
ReplyDeleteRepetition is so essential to retaining things, but it is so boring! I think it is wonderful, however, that God designed young children to learn best through repetition, and to enjoy it. That is one big reason why it's so important to start teaching children music while they are very young.
DeleteAnother important point mentioned in the article is the key of variation. When one way of practicing isn't working even after many repetition, it is extremely important to come up with different ways to accomplish the same thing. Variation solidifies the knowledge gained from repetition by being able to complete an action many different ways.
ReplyDeleteI really like the emphasis that this article put on variation. To me, it makes a ton of sense to use variation in both teaching and practice. Some people learn in very different ways, and they may not be able to learn as well using a certain method. Varying the teaching methods can help guarantee that everyone is finding at least one way of learning that makes sense to them.
DeleteLove the points on variation! It is like handing the student a brand of candy, but in all different colors and flavors!
DeleteWow! The essence of the Rehearsal Frame can determine how experienced or impacting a teacher can be. By using the frame in lesson planning, teachers can decide on how their goal for the student can be accomplished. I had never heard of the Rehearsal Frame before coming to college, and I am ever so grateful to have done this research on the importance of framework for music lessons.
